[Comic Review] New Avengers #1

I…am not an ‘Avengers’ fan. It seems that Marvel put those characters in damn near everything, no different than their major competitor does with their own “core” money-makers. It bothers me that they choose to do so, and in my opinion, can often ruin a book that would have otherwise had the ability to stand on its own.

NewAvengers001That rant being shared, this version, wrapped up as New Avengers hit the shelves with their #1. Needless to say, I had my spiteful doubts, but, I actually enjoyed this title and have hopes it continues to be this good. Captain America is the big roller in this issue, and he doesn’t have much of a presence, and from how I’m reading it, won’t, as the Black Panther is the leader of this particular super group.

The story here, I thought, was kind of cool. Focusing almost entirely on the Black Panther we get a bit of some background of the character and of course, the future of what this group is going to face. We find that a destroyer of worlds is heading our way, and in response this “New Avengers: Illuminati” must save the day.

The artwork here is also good enough to make this title stand out a bit more for me. This issue is relatively dark, which doesn’t hurt it at all in my opinion. Although the Black Panther’s suit doesn’t take much (his name says it all), the artistic team behind this title seem to add a little panache with the use of shadows.

Rating: 8/10 Gingered Digits.

Reasoning: Artwork (1.5/2), Character Development (1.5/2), Climax (1.5/2), Plot Development (1.5/2), Story (2/2).
